February is a month to celebrate friends, family, and fun. National Pizza Day (9th February) and Valentine’s Day (as if you needed reminding!) fall in the same month – much to celebrate!
And to celebrate both, many will turn their hand to making pizza at home. Whereas some will find the inconvenience and hassle of making pizza from scratch leaves them feeling daunted by the task, taking away the fun from celebrating with their loved ones.
Shuffling around supermarket shelves for whole packets of ingredients eats into the fun of crafting pizza, not to mention the waste and cost. Weighing out ingredients, fermenting and proving time, to find out 6 hours later that your dough cannot be used is one of those excruciating ‘doh’ moments in life! All that anticipated fun has quickly turned into a chore, and no delicious meal to enjoy.
There are a lot of ways where your perfect home pizza making experience can go off the rails.
So, here are a few helpful tips and products from us, whilst you focus on crafting happy moments.
You’re usually asking one of two questions when you’re making pizza dough:
- Why is my dough so tough?
- Why didn’t my dough rise?
There are multiple reasons for either of these issues, but they only become visible when it’s too late – typically after you’ve already spent hours kneading, rising and shaping the dough.
Recipe and method are key. Our pre-made dough balls have been perfected through years of experience with the same recipe and method. We start with only the best 00 flour, wheat germ, extra virgin olive oil and sea salt. No preservatives or additives like food enzymes or improvers are added to our dough balls to ensure a consistent flavor and texture. The dough balls 72-hour fermentation process results in a long-rising, light and airy crust ready for hand stretching and topping.
Here are a few more tips to ensure the best pizza when using our dough:-
Don’t use the dough cold.
Our dough balls arrive chilled. Before you begin stretching, we recommend leaving it to reach room temperature for 2-3 hours. Gluten, the protein that makes pizza dough chewy, is tighter in cold conditions like the refrigerator; adding warmth will loosen up the dough, making it easier to stretch and shape.
Don’t lose all the air
Once at room temperature, there is a temptation to remove the dough from the bag and knead it; however, doing so removes air bubbles that have formed during fermentation, essentially removing all of the elasticity created, leaving you with a tough dough ball. Instead, gently shape the dough into a disc without kneading, and move onto your knuckles to stretch it.
Still daunted by fresh dough? We’ve got a little cheat for that too! Our hand-stretched, par-baked bases, crafted using the same dough, come ready to top and bake. Super easy for everyone!
